Photoshop Tricks Keyboard Short-Cuts

by David Peters

Selecting Colors from an Image Quickly To take a color from your image and turn it into the foreground color Press I to activate the Eyedropper Tool and then click on any color in your image. To take that color and turn it into the background color, press the ALT Key and click on any color in your image.

Change Brush Tip Sizes Quickly With any brush selected you can press the Right Bracket Key “]” to increase the size of the brush tip, or Press the Left Bracket Key “[” to decrease the size of the brush tip.

The Move Tool & The Arrow Keys Get in the habit of calling up the Move Tool with the keyboard shortcut, which is the letter V. Also, once the Move Tool is active you can use your Keyboard Arrow Keys to nudge a layer or selection in 1 pixel increments. To speed things up, Press Shift along with an arrow key to nudge in 10 pixel increments.

Hide Your Palettes To hid all your palettes press the tab key once. You can press the Tab key again to bring them back. To hide all your palettes except the toolbar press Shift+Tab.

Zooming In & Zooming Out To use the zoom tool press CTRL and the plus sign “+” (Mac: Command and the “+” sign). To zoom out press CTRL and the minus sign “-” (Mac: Command and the “-”sign).

Navigating In Magnified Images If you have lost your bearings when zooming in on a large image you can jump quickly to specific views using the following shortcuts: To set the view to the top left hand corner of your image press the Home Key. Press the End Key to set the view to the bottom right hand corner of your image. To move the view one full screen down press the Page Down Key. Press CTRL+Page Down (Mac: Command +Page Down) to move the screen view one full screen to the right. Press CTRL+Page Up (Mac: Command +Page Up) to move the screen view one full screen to the left.

Selecting Just The Pixels On A Layer An easy way to select an object that is on a transparent layer is to Press the Command Key (PC: Control key) and click on the layer with the object in the Layers Palette. This makes sure that only the opaque pixels (the pixels that are visible) will be selected with the marching ants, instead of the entire layer.

Tile Images For Better Visibility When you open many files at once Photoshop has them cascade, and the overlapping files can make it difficult to select individual ones. To get around this choose Window> Arrange> Tile and all of your open files will rearrange themselves to be visible all at once. When you’re ready to close them all don’t spend time closing them individually, instead use the Close All shortcut Command+Alt+W (PC: Control+Option+W).

Getting Rid Of the Welcome Screen - And Bringing It Back When you first open Photoshop CS you will probably see a Welcome Screen that has links to Tutorials, Tips and Tricks, and a set of Color Management Help Files. At some point you might want to stop this screen from coming up. You should see a check box at the bottom of the screen that you can click to hide the screen at startup. Later on, if you change your mind and decide that you want to have it show up again, you can temporarily bring the screen back by clicking under the Help menu and choosing Welcome Screen.

Cycle through All of Your Open Documents At some point you may want to find one of your open documents that are hidden, but navigating using the Window menu won’t help because you can’t recall the name of the file. Instead you can press Control-Tab repeatedly (MAC and PC) to cycle through all of your open documents and switch between them.

Creating a Work of Art from a Photograph

by David Peters

Sometimes we take pictures and when we print them out we simply say, “Wow, that could almost be a painting!” Many people are not aware that there are software programs that contain techniques that you can use to alter your photos into a watercolor or pen and ink painting or charcoal drawing. Once you have changed your photo you then can print it out onto canvas or fine art watercolor paper for that true art feel and permanence.

Today digital photography methods are closing the gap between “fine art photography” and simply “fine art.” In the past it could take a painter days, weeks and months to create paintings or water colors; now this can be done digitally in a few hours. The great thing is that a variety of techniques can be applied to the same image. It all depends on how you want to “interpret” your art work.

Adobe PhotoShop Elements offers many wonderful filter tools and it simply requires a little bit of time and experimentation to learn how to use some of these to enhance your photographs. Adding a little “noise” or Gaussian Blur” to an image can do wonders to transform a photo.

As you practice you will become familiar with many of the filter tools available and you will soon figure out that you will want to apply different tools to certain parts of your image. A simple way to do this is to select an area of your picture that you want to apply an effect to and “cut it” from the main photo and copy it into a new folder. When you have done this you can then work on each part of your image independently. Finally, once you have finished adding your effects to the part you had cut away you can simply copy it back into the original image and relocate it to the proper position. It will literally “snap” into place when you line it up with where it needs to be.

Photoshop Elements has some great “Effects” tools and I recommend playing with them of these to see what they can do with your image. Also, when you have created some masterpieces, try changing them into black and white or select portions of your image as black and white while other portions remain in color. You should see a “painted effect” on the color portion.

Another interesting fact of transforming these photographs in this way is that you are literally altering the pixels of the image. This allows you to enlarge the image far greater without the image resolution loss that you would experience with a normal photo. For example, we have applied some techniques to an image taken on an 8 megapixel digital camera and have then printed that image at 30 x 40 inches on canvas and it is stunning…and it can easily go larger.

Frame Your Photo

by David Peters

Incorporating a frame into your photo can transform a plain picture into an amazing one. Typically a foreground element is used to create the frame. Some frame elements could be a window frame, arches, a door, rows of trees, a fence, an overhanging tree branch and so on

The goal in using a frame in your photo is to isolate the main subject and construct an appealing composition within your photo. Many times it is used to create a feeling of depth. You may decide to keep the detail of the frame (as in a wall, fence or branch), or let the frame go completely dark (as in a window frame).

Keep in mind objects in the foreground (and even in the middle or background) that could be used as a frame when composing a shot. Move around in your environment to find the best angle or viewpoint when framing a subject. You might need to kneel down, back up or zoom in to capture the best composition for your chosen frame and subject.

Framing can also be done after the fact by combining two or more pictures in an image editing software. Very dramatic effects can be accomplished this way and you are only limited by your imagination.

Be careful when adding a frame through digital editing though. While you can certainly combine features of different images together, be cautious about adding artificial frames on familiar scenes and landscapes.

Nothing could look odder than the Eifel Tower being framed by the Great Wall of China. Unless to are trying to create a dissonance to the viewer, a picture of that extreme will only look bizarre.

Next time you go to take that photograph, check out what you might be able to use as a natural frame. Experiment with this, and if you have any doubts, take one photo with a frame and one without. I bet you’ll find you eye drawn to the one making use of a natural frame.

Framing Your Picture For Better Results

by David Peters

The use of a frame can turn an otherwise plain picture into a pleasing one. Usually a foreground element is used to create the frame. Examples are an overhanging tree branch, a window frame, a door, arches, a fence, rows of trees, etc.

Frames serve to isolate the main subject of your photograph and create an interesting composition. When framing your photograph it is oftentimes the feeling of depth you’re after. At times you may decide to retain the detail of the frame (as in a wall, fence or branch), or let the frame go completely dark (as in a window frame).

When you are composing a shot, keep your eyes open to foreground (and sometimes, even middle or background) objects that can be used as a natural frame. You may need to physically back up a bit, kneel down for a more pleasant composition, or zoom in to include your subject within your chosen frame.

Image editing software can also be used to create framing effects after the fact by combining two or more pictures. You can create some very dramatic effects this way and the joy of it is, you are truly only limited by your imagination.

However, a word of caution is necessary here. Though there is nothing wrong with combining different images to create another one, be very careful about employing artificial frames on recognizable scenes and landscapes.

As an extreme example, don’t frame the Statue of Liberty by the St. Louis Arch. Unless your purpose is to create dissonance within your viewers’ minds, that picture will just look strange.

So, before you take that shot next time, look around and see if there is an object that you can use as a natural frame. Take a picture without the frame, and another one with the frame, and compare. Betcha, you’ll like the one with the frame better!

Outdoor Wedding Pictures are Better in Virginia Beach

by Samuel S. Peters

Weddings are too expensive and too special to let pass without quality photography recording the day. Because weather is so unpredictable, some prefer indoor pictures. Others choose the backdrop of nature or favorite surroundings setting the mood of the picture or depicting their interests.

Those choosing to get married in the Virginia Beach area could have no more beautiful backdrop against which to have their wonderful event photographed with nature. This area of eastern Virginia is replete with a wide variety of locations that would be ideal for such a special day.

The number one choice for outdoor wedding pictures in this area would be the beaches. Situated at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach has both bay and ocean beaches such as Baylake Beach, North Virginia Beach, and Sandbridge Beach. These and others provide many locations for a wedding party to pose with the ocean, piers, or sand dunes as a backdrop.

Of course, with the ocean comes lighthouses, twelve in this area. Many of these make a pristine scene behind the couple. For example, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was originally built in 1792 but replaced in 1881 due to structural problems. Nevertheless, both are still standing at the corner of bay and ocean, awaiting their photograph behind the happy couple.

Lynnhaven Bay intersects the city leaving much waterfront property with many beautiful homes along it. Hundreds of alcoves and dead end roads lead to forested waterfront and natural beauty. Some homeowners are flattered when a couple asks if their wedding pictures could be taken in their yard. Lake Smith reservoir further to the west also provides such opportune locations.

Another possible wedding backdrop would be one of the many beautiful public parks in Virginia Beach. Perhaps your photographer will recommend the best possibilities if you are not familiar with the area. A spring wedding could include the dazzling beauty of the flowering fruit trees at Brookdale Farm. Perhaps the wedding colors could be picked to match the blossoms, making a picture perfect scene.

Those desiring to incorporate the historicity of Virginia Beach into their pictures might consider two buildings. Lynnhaven House was built in 1725 by Francis Thelaball II. It still looks the same today and even has people there during tourist season, dressed in period costumes. The Old Coast Guard Station is a100 year-old building on the beach. It would blend the beach and history into one backdrop.

These ideas are only to get your imagination working; it is certainly not a complete list. Perhaps they encourage you to think beyond the safe weather locations indoors to include Virginia Beach itself in the record of your special day.

Tips on Photographing Pets

by SFXsource

You got that new pet, and now want to start photographing your furry friend. You won’t settle for a regular snap-shot, and are reading this article because you are looking for some inspiration. The following tips will help you to take beautiful photos of your pet.

1. Photograph your pet in natural light. Either use light coming in from the window, or take them outside. Flash photography and animals do not go well together. The flash could scare your pet, and it also causes red-eye.

2. Get on the same level as your pet. Bend down or lie on the ground. This not only gives you a different perspective, but you will appear less intimidating. It’s always amusing when pets get close to the lens to investigate, creating a great photo opportunity.

3. Take the time to learn about your pet’s personality and unique ways. By knowing more about them, you will have more fun and it will be easier to photograph them.

4. Get creative by changing your aperture settings, switching lenses, or playing with shutter speed. A fast shutter speed freezes your pet in motion, a small aperture blurs the background, a macro lens will allow you to take close-up photos, and a wide-angle lens fits more pet in the frame.

5. Be patient. As your photo shoot progresses, your pet will get more comfortable with you and the camera. If you are anxious and uncomfortable, they too will become anxious and uncomfortable, so remember to relax and be calm.

6. Expect the unexpected. You never know when you will get a good shot because pets are unpredictable. Try photographing them with their favorite toy, enjoying a treat, or frolicking in the park.

Remember to have fun! You will be able to display your pets looking like rock stars in no time. You can always look online or in magazine for additional ideas.

Used Digital Cameras

by Gary Pearson

Digital photography is very popular, but buying a quality digital can be a very expensive endeavor. My first digital was very cheap, and it didn?t work well at all. It was good for taking snapshots outside in the bright sunlight, but that was about it. I took it to a concert once and never bothered to take it again. The pictures were horrible. I know have a better camera, but it did cost me a lot of money. If you want something that works well, but you don?t have a lot of cash to spare, you might consider getting a used digital camera.

One place where you can search for used digital camera in the internet is eBay. They have many different kinds of models there and you may just find what you are looking for. However you might have to attend a few auctions before you are given the model of your choice at the price that you have quoted. Even if you get outbid, you are sure to find one that is priced reasonably enough to enable you to purchase it. There are a number of models that are available and you would definitely find the one that you are looking for.

Check up on any used digital camera that you want to bid on. Read every single thing the seller has listed with the camera so you know what you are getting. Though some of them seem to be so cheap it?s a huge bargain, you should know there is probably a reason for that.

In the description of the camera it would be mentioned what is wrong with it. If you read it and feel that you can get the problem fixed, you can go ahead and buy the product. However it might be that you would have to spend quite a bit of money on repairing it and you are reluctant to do so. In that case you need not buy that model and search for something else.

It is in your best interest to pay for any used digital camera you may find on eBay through Paypal or with a credit card. That way you can get your money back if the item is not as described or has more problems than the seller alerted you to before you bid. As long as you do your research, you should be able to find a quality used digital camera that is perfect for you. Just take your time and don?t get too excited or you may spend more than you wanted to.
